currently reading Cinder by Marissa Meyer (finallyyyyyyy)

This book is SO VERY COOL. I highly recommend it to ALL OF YOU. (Even if you *normally* don’t read YA or fairy tales.)

Also (another reason why this book is so very cool): I got a tiny mention in the Acknowledgments page.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

*fangirly*

Not that Ms. Meyer and I are buddies or anything, but we were part of the same writing/critique group a while back, and I did get to read the first chapter before it was published (published! in a book! with an awesome cover!) so it was super nice of her to include my name (as foreign sounding and hard to pronounce as it is).

Just.

I don’t want to seem like I’m bragging (because it’s not a big deal and I didn’t do much but proof-read it a little and gave some feedback), but man is it cool to see your name in print - in whatever capacity.

So yes: GO BUY THIS BOOK and support awesome fangirls like Marissa Meyer. (We totally need to start a Lunar Chronicles fandom too, so it’s very important that as many people read this book as possible. Fandoms of one are pretty sad places, you know. *I speak from experience*)

shelfmyself:

Just finished reading Cinder by Marissa Meyer. This book was good. So good. How the heck am I supposed to wait an entire year for the next one?!

I knew Meyer was a good writer - I’ve been reading her work under the nom de plume Alicia Blade (a rather big name in Sailor Moon fanfiction) since middle school which for me was in 2000-2001ish. Seriously, I first read stuff by this author off a Dell monitor running on Windows 98.

Alicia Blade wrote great romance - that’s what I knew her for and she really seemed to know how to hit the right romantic formula every time (always a little familiar, but with an original twist). Her early love stories were fairly simple and even a little saccharine, but as she got older her plots gained complexity and the romance between the characters gained a lot of nuance. There’s something very enjoyable about watching an author grow like that.

Reading Cinder was like meeting up with an old friend, someone with whom I felt comfortable and familiar. I knew I was in for a good yarn and I wasn’t disappointed. The story has a really good balance of adventure and romance - the classic Cinderalla fairy tale goes science fiction. No spoilers here, but I will say that I loved Meyer’s take on the ball scene (pumpkin, dress, and all).

There’s also a lot of set up for the next three books to come in this series, each based on another classic fairy tale: Scarlet (Little Red Riding Hood), Cress (Rapunzel), and Winter (Snow White). Cinder has a cliffhanger ending, so I’m dying for the next one to come out.

Meyer is the second major Sailor Moon fanfic writer I’ve followed that has become a successful YA author, the first being the wonderful Alaya Johnson (pen name Lois Fogg) whose most recent publications include the novel Moonshine and a short story in the Zombies vs Unicorns anthology.

Now if Lilac Summers starts publishing original work as well, I can die happy.
